This day was July 1st, 1867.  The U.S.A. became independant from England with a revolution on July 4th, 1776.

There are 10 Canadian provinces: British Columbia (B.C.), Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia (NOVA!!), New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.).

Jean Chretien, Kim Campbell, Brian Mulroney, John Turner, Pierre Elliot Trudeau (P.E.T.) and Joe Clark were all Canadian Prime Ministers.  P.E.T. and Brian Mulroney were prime minister for a long time and were very famous.

Compare Canada and Japan.

Canada is a huge country with a small poplulation and many natural resources, the leader of Canada is a prime minister.  Japan is a small country with a large  population and few natural resources, the leader is also a prime minister.  Japan has a long history, Canada has a short history.  Both countries have red and white flags.
 

Compare Canada and the U.S.A.

Canada is a little bigger than the U.S.A., but has a much smaller population.  Canada has 10 provinces and a prime minister, the U.S.A. has 50 states and a  president.  In Canada people speak English and French, in the U.S.A. English and Spanish.  The U.S. economy is strong and everybody knows America, Canada's economy is small but strong, but nobody knows Canada.
 

Tell me about "Japanada."

(note: "Japanada" is a novelty concept I introduced to the students of my class to make them laugh and to make them think "what if...")
Japanada is a fantasy country - it combines Canada and Japan.  If Japanada can exist, Japan can have natural resources and English and French education and open nature, Canadians can learn about Japan and Asia and have a new language and learn more about tradition and history.
 

What sports are played in Canada.

This question is easy because any sports are played in Canada.  Hockey, lacrosse, skating, skateboarding, skiing, snowboarding, running, soccer, and cycling are all popular in Canada.  Sumo is played, but it is not popular.
 

How do people travel in Canada?

People travel just like in Japan, but there is no bullet train (shinkansen).  Cars are the most popular, then buses and bicycles (in summer), then also in remote places planes, trucks, snowmobiles and even dog sleds are used.  Trains and subways are only popular near big cities.
 

What is special about Quebec?

Quebec has a long history, in Quebec people speak French.  Quebec had terrorism in the 1970s and still today some Quebeckers want independence.  Quebec has different history and tradition than other parts of Canada.
 

What happened in Quebec in 1970?

In 1970 in Quebec there was "the October Crisis", there was terrorism because some groups wanted independence for Quebec.  There were bombs and kidnappings.  It was a bad time for Quebec and for all Canada.

We watched videos about Canada, curling, Canada's government (parliament), a Japanese artist living in Montreal, about Leonard Cohen, and also some movies.
 

What kind of food is popular in Canada?

Because Canadians are often immigrants from any country in the world, any country's food is popular.  Most popular is steak and potatoes, Chinese food, Italian food and sometimes Japanese food.  Maple syrup and salmon are famous Canadian foods, but most Canadians like to eat bread, meat, salad, potatoes.
 

What kind of people live in Canada?  What countries do they come from?

There are three typed of Canadians: native, old family, and immigrants.  Immigrants come from any country in the world like Japan, China, Korea, England, France, Germany, Spain, Africa, Egypt, the Middle East, Poland, Russia, and any country.  The native people originally came from East Asia (Siberia and China) over 10,000 years ago.
 

What is the weather like in Canada?  What is the temperature in summer and winter?

The weather in Canada is similar to Hokkaido.  In the summer is it hot and humid and 35 degrees.  In the winter is it cold and snowy and -35 degrees.  Don't go to Canada in February, you will be very cold.
